The brick repair on the chimney (left) is well under way. It had many deteriorated brick. We removed these bricks using brick saws with diamond blades. After the brick were removed, we replaced the damaged brick with new brick custom matched to the original. The brick repair on the chimney (right) completely disappears.
For the masonry repairs to bond properly and completely repair the cracks in the brick/grout, the mortar must be cut a minimum of 3/4 of an inch deep. The second picture (right) is the same brick wall after the brick repairs were completed. (note: Both brick repair pictures were taken the same day.)
In these brick repair photos, we show a brick wall that did not have proper wall-ties. Wall-ties are a thin metal strap that stabilize the brick by affixing the brick to the stud-wall behind them. Brick walls without brick ties are loose and can crack more easily. We installed brick ties throughout the rest of the wall and the section where the brick had fallen. As you can see on the right, *Longhorn Masonry relayed the brick that had fallen using custom matched mortar to complete a perfect brick repair.
There are many brick repair companies and do-it-yourselfers that try to do masonry repair. You can see in the picture on the left that this is not always the correct way to do brick repair. The brick repair picture on the right shows the same masonry wall after *Longhorn Masonry Repair cleaned the smears off of the brick and properly repaired the mortar grout joints. As you can see there is a wide range in quality of masonry repairs by different brick repair companies. This is why *Longhorn Masonry Repair is the most trusted name in Brick Repair.
Many homes are built with imperfections in the quality like this one. All too often, brick layers don't know or don't care if they are building things wrong. On this brick home, the brick layers filled the corners solid thinking that it was a good place to use their wasted mortar. However, there is not a proper water barrier installed behind the brick. When these sections of brick got wet, the water absorbed in through the brick and the solid mortar behind them and into the wood wall. Obviously wood swells when it gets wet. This process pushed on the brick until it cracked the brick and mortar around them. We removed the excess mortar from behind the brick wall and any broken/cracked brick. Then proceeded to install custom matched bricks and grout to make the masonry repair disappear.
This set of Brick Repair photos gives a close up view of masonry repair. If you will notice in the picture on the right, the crack repaired is at the right of the window coming down both directions. In the picture on the left, you can see that some of the Brick Repair is beginning to dry and the custom matched mortar is beginning to disappear.
Below are the before and after pictures of a project where the old repairs are smeared and used mis-matched mortar,
and in the after photo, mortar smears are cleaned off the bricks and the mortar is repaired with matching mortar. You
will notice the second picture looks darker. This is because the wall is wet from cleaning and the pictures were taken
the same day. The first in the morning with more direct light and the second in the late afternoon when the sun was on
the other side of the building.
As you can see, masonry repairs look much better when the mortar is tested and properly
matched with our mortar matching services.
